Purpletop

A common warm season grass of pastures, prairies and savannas. Purple top is a late summer component of many pastures in Missouri. Often overlooked as a forage species, this grass supplies forage during late July and August when other forages may be lacking. Consider adding purple top to native grass plantings to add more diversity and late season production. Purple top is also called grease grass due to its waxy seed heads. This species is also useful in wildflower plantings when a grass component is desired.
