Little Bluestem
A widespread species of dry sites and prairies that occurs in nearly every state from the Great Basin eastward. In Missouri it is found in prairies, glades and savannas. Little bluestem is found primarily on dry sites and is often absent in wet areas. Forage value is good when managed correctly and can make a great addition to forage mixes. In wildflower plantings little bluestem provides a grass component without detracting from forbs. Little bluestem is also the host of many skipper species and serves as the overwintering site for some insects. This species is tolerant to the herbicide imazapic, which provides control of many troublesome introduced grasses. Can be planted alone or used in mixes.
