Prairie Blazing Star
Prairie Blazingstar is one of the most iconic species of the tallgrass prairie. This species occurs in many environments including prairies, glades, savannas, roadsides, pastures, and woodland edges. Taller plants occur on richer soils and on dry sites the plant may only reach two feet tall. Bright purple flowers occur throughout July. This species may take three years to bloom. Young plants resemble grass so they may be difficult to spot in new plantings. Prairie blazingstar is great for many different planting types and is a valuable addition for pollinators. This species is great in landscape plantings and can be used in more traditional gardens as well.
