One of the more common native legumes. Found throughout the plains and Midwest, this species occurs on a variety of sites. Highly adaptable, purple prairie clover is found on rich prairie soils and shallow glades. This species is readily grazed by livestock and the beautiful purple flowers are a magnet for many bees. Purple prairie clover often has low seed dormancy levels and is tolerant of some herbicides used in native pasture establishment. These attributes make it an easy way to add legumes into a new or existing stand of native warm season grasses.

  • Planting date: Dormant seeding, November – January,    Spring plant April to late May
    •  Stratification: Usually not necessary
  •   Height: 18 – 24 inches tall
  •   Moisture: average – dry
  •   Sun Exposure: Full
  • Planting Rate: 2 pounds per acre in mixes, 10 pounds per acre alone
