Rattlesnake Master

Eryngium yuccifolium

A common species of dry sites and prairies. Rattlesnake master is generally avoided by deer in landscape plantings, but browsed by cattle in native pastures. Dense, bristly flowers adorn three to four feet tall plants. Leaves resemble those of yucca species. This species serves as one of the host plants of the black swallowtail butterfly and a nectar source for many other pollinators.
