Warm Season Grass
Before settlement, Missouri was comprised of almost one-third native prairie, including many species of warm season grass. Native warm season grasses are deep rooted perennials that thrive during the summer months of June-August.
Their deep roots allow better use of water and soil nutrients, which provides excellent drought tolerance. In addition, they provide high nutrition forage when cool season grasses are dormant and critical wildlife habitat.
