Sideoats Grama
Bouteloua curtipendula
Sideoats grama is a drought tolerant, shorter grass of glades and prairies. This species is a great addition to pasture mixes on rough and dry sites. Sideoats grama is also a useful grass component in pollinator plantings and is the larval host of several skipper species. This species is easy to identify by the seed heads. Small clusters of two to three seeds within a spikelet tend to be held on one side of the stalk. Under some growing conditions spikelets may alternate on each side of the stalk. Flowering occurs over a long period throughout the summer and maturity can be managed through grazing. This species may be injured by imazapic as seedlings, but it is tolerant after establishment.
